I like exploring food joints that are not in the mall. A couple of months ago, I got to check out Charlie’s Grind and Grill at Aguirre St. in Legaspi Village, Makati.
I was familiar with Charlie’s since I saw a branch of this burger joint at Ronac Center in Ortigas a couple of years back but I never got around to trying it until it was able to establish a branch in Makati. Actually, Charlie’s Grind and Grill has been around since 2009. Their first branch opened in Kapitolyo, Pasig hidden behind a car station.
I went here with some friends from work.
We really brought our appetites to prepare for this food feature!
We ate burgers, fries, a pasta and buffalo wings! They’re all delicious to look at and they’re all equally delicious to eat. I’ll tell you more about them but first a little tour of the place.
A cool wall art
A flat screen TV with cable so you can watch a movie or two while waiting for you food.
And here’s the open kitchen. Feel free to take a look while they prepare your food.
Oky so now let’s talk about the food.
This is Maila’s favorite: Black Truffle Fries. It’s one of their best sellers. When this was served, my initial thought was “What are those brown toppings on the fries?” Black Truffle Fries are made of fresh Igorota Idaho potatoes mixed in truffle oil and truffle salt topped with grilled chicken liver. Yes, you read that right! Grilled chicken liver. I found that surprising too. First time I learned such fries topping exist!
The soft texture of the chicken liver and its bitterness complimented the saltiness of the fries. Maila single-handedly finished the whole thing!
This is the Gourmet Chicken Burger. It’s marinated fresh chicken breast patty with white cheddar cheese, butter leaf lettuce, tomatoes, onions, mayonnaise and honey mustard on a butter bun with mango chutney and banana pepper.
I enjoyed eating this burger because the chicken patty was flavorful and the veggie toppings of tomato, lettuce and onions were very fresh. Also, the cheese, the sweet mango and the pepper chutney added something extra to it which made it even more delightful to eat! This burger is also great for those who are trying to eat healthy since the chicken is grilled not fried.
This is the Reverse Buffalo Wings. Not exactly my favorite. I do not like the smell of this buffalo wings. I blame it on the bleu cheese ingredient. Though it does taste good and this reverse buffalo wings was a favorite meal by the rest of the group.
This is the Chick’n Charlie burger and you can have this mild or spicy. Since I let my friends choose, spicy won. I am not a fan of spicy and so I didn’t want to taste it. I eventually gave in though and found that the spiciness wasn’t overpowering to the taste buds that it’d make me want to reach for water or Coke or whatever liquid drink there was around just to wash the spiciness away. This is a no-fuss chicken sandwich with cheese and vegetable toppings. Good enough to eat as it is. No additional dressing required.
These are the Irish Nachos – another meal surprise for us since they came with fresh Igorota Idaho potatoes and not the usual chips. Irish nachos came with various toppings: rock salt, ground black pepper, green onions, diced onions, diced tomatoes, black olives, jalapeno topped with sour cream and cheese sauce. I loved this!
I thought the combination of toppings and sauce were just right and the Igorota Idaho potatoes are great! The nachos smelled delicious. It smelled delicious and yes, they were as delightful to the taste buds – like the fluffy potatoes with the sour cream and cheese sauce were bursting with goodness in your mouth.
This is the shrimp pasta. So ma-umami! Seafood flavored pasta won’t normally be the type of pasta I’d order. Seafood taste can be overpowering to the taste buds. Not this though. It was just right. It’s the deliciousness of the tomato sauce and the Parmesan cheese that one would remember from this pasta dish.
The Wagyu Cheeseburger is perfect for those who are trying to watch their weight. Wagyu beef is expensive but that’s because it’s a higher grade of beef that’s rich in unsaturated fat. The meat is tender and beefy, but it’s something I only tasted after chewing on the beef like its juiciness is an aftertaste.
Sticky Buffalo Wings. They were okay. Nothing special about this. Chicken texture was okay and there was harmony between the sweetness and spiciness.
Lastly, we ordered the Black Angus Burger.
This burger was cooked to perfection! From the very first bite, I already tasted its juiciness! The beef patty had a fine texture to it, the meat was grounded perfectly and the veggie toppings were fresh and crisp. We couldn’t get enough of this! At its price of Php200, it’s worth it!
What sets Charlie’s apart from other burger joints in the Metro? They serve fresh and good handcrafted food meaning they prepare them on the spot by hand once an order is placed. It’s not stored in a freezer and ready to be cooked soon as a customer orders. They even make their own bread. This makes the waiting time for your food longer than other burger joints, but that’s okay. The food will be worth the wait. Plus it’s a chill out place. Perfect for fun conversations with the barkada over food and drinks.
Did I mention they have imported beers?
If you work in the area, do drop by this place with your set of friends.
